Mr. Julius Migos Ogamba, is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, who was before his appointment serving as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen), and Senior Partner at Migos-Ogamba and Waudo Advocate. Mr. Ogamba is a seasoned, visionary, and accomplished legal practitioner of over 30 years’ experience.

Eng. John Tanui, MBS is the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy in charge of the State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy. Prior to joining the Ministry, Eng. Tanui was the Chief Executive Officer of the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) for over 7 years, Deputy Country CEO and Vice President of Huawei Technologies responsible for Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia and Djibouti and the Director of Technical Service Department in the same organization that he served for over of 15 years.

With over 17 years in the ICT industry and international business management, Eng. Tanui has worked in several countries in Africa and in China acquiring knowledge and experience in Business and project management, he has keen interest and expertise in Engineering Turnkey Projects, Innovations, setup and management of industry collaborations and partnerships. He is passionate about how technology can be utilized to solve challenges facing economies.

He holds a bachelor's degree of Technology in Electrical and Communication Engineering from Moi University and MBA in International Business from the University of Nairobi where he is currently pursuing a PhD in global business management. He is a member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (MIEK), a registered engineer and a member of the Academy of International Business.

Eng. Tanui is an active ICT professional who was profiled as tenth in the 2012 Top 40 under 40 by the Business Daily (Nation Media Group). He is a Council Member of Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology, a council member of IEK (Institution of Engineers of Kenya) where he chairs industrialization, Environment and quality assurance committee and serves as committee member for Advocacy, Journal and Publicity. Previously, he served as the University Council Vice Chairman at Technical University of Kenya and as an Advisory Council Member of the Presidential Digital Talent Program.

Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala

Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala is the Principal Secretary, the State Department for Higher Education and Research, Ministry of Education, Kenya. She is a passionate educator and leader who is committed to transforming higher education and its impact on the continent and globally. Prior to her appointment, she worked for the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR); a pan-African not-for-profit organization for 11 years and exited as the Deputy Executive Director. Her accomplishments through the Pedagogical Leadership in Africa (PedaL) project are internationally acclaimed. She has extensive knowledge of actors, issues, challenges, and opportunities in African higher education and has trained over 3,000 teaching staff in 91 universities in 11 African countries in innovative pedagogies. She has contributed immensely to the formulation of education policy and participated in education policy debates within the region and globally: Association of African Universities; EU-Africa policy dialogues; London School of Economics Africa Summit, among others. She holds a B.Ed and M. Phil in Planning and Economics of Education, Moi University, Kenya; PhD from the University of Athens, and has received further training at the International Institute of Educational Planning in Paris, France.

Dr. Belio R. Kipsang (PhD), CBS

Dr. Belio Kipsang is the Principal Secretary, State Department for Basic Education in the Ministry of Education. He was appointed on 2nd December, 2022. Prior to his appointment to the current position, Dr. Belio was the Principal Secretary State Department for Regional and Northern Corridor Development. He has previously served as Principal Secretary, State Department for Basic Education and Early Learning. He also served as Managing Trustee/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Coffee Development Fund and Deputy CEO and Head of Operations Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) where he had previously held various Strategic Management positions.

Dr. Belio holds other distinguished positions. He serves as a Council Member at Mt. Kenya University and Cooperative University College where he also Chairs Finance, Planning and Development.

He is a Board member Finance Alliance for Sustainable Trade, (FAST) an International Think Tank on Financial Resource Mobilization; Council Member, Advisory Council for Coffee Initiative; Government Delegate, International Coffee Organization (ICO) and; Chair, Operations Committee, Association of African Higher Education Financing Agencies (AAHEFA).

Dr. Belio is a holder of PhD degree in Education (Educational Administration and Planning from The Catholic University of Eastern Africa. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Economics and a Bachelors (Honours) degree in Education (Business and Economics), both from the University of Nairobi. He has had extensive professional training opportunities which has exposed him to local and international conferences and workshops in areas of higher education financing and administration, leadership, management, micro-enterprise development, fraud, corruption and combating economic crime, agricultural value chain financing, computing and other areas of business and management among others particularly in prestigious institutions such as the London School of Economics (LSE) in the UK, Harvard University in the USA, State University of New York in the USA, among other institutions in Kenya, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Thailand among others.

As an education scholar, Dr. Belio has authored highly competent academic and research papers in the areas of Higher Education Financing and Planning.

As the Principal Secretary for Basic education, Dr. Belio has been the lead advisor to the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform (PWPER) appointed by the president on 30th September, 2022.

He is an Associate Member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and also; a member, Institute of Directors of Kenya.

Dr. Belio has received various awards that include: First Class Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (C.B.S.).

Sheena Raikundalia has over 16 years of experience in the legal, financial services and impact investment sectors in Europe and Africa and over 7 years’ board experience.

She is extremely passionate and confident about the potential in Africa. With her diverse experience, she understands and has strong networks with the government, corporate, international donor, investor and local tech entrepreneur/hub perspective.

She is currently working as the Chief Growth Officer with Kuza One, an agri-tech, digitizing the agriculture value chain through its tech platform and network of on the ground rural agripreneurs. Prior to this she worked with the British Government in Kenya as the Country Director of the UK-Kenya Tech Hub.

She has had a diverse career- a solicitor in London , a senior advisor in Kenya to an impact investing group, where she provided strategic advisory services to financial institutions, start-ups, corporations, development agencies and NGOs across the African market. She is proud to add failed entrepreneur as one of her achievements, having learnt more in that intense period than all her experience combined!

She has held non-executive director positions in the UK and in Kenya in institutions such as schools, SMEs, MFIs, co-chaired the ICT Donor Group in Kenya and chairs the Resource and Partnership Committee Board at the Kenya National Innovation Agency, which sits under the Ministry of Education.

She is a U.K. qualified solicitor with a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Bristol and an MBA from Lord Ashcroft International Business School.

Tom Porter

Tom Porter is the Country Director Kenya overseeing all British Council programmes in Kenya. He leads the development of new governance, planning, impact and processes for the portfolio across Arts & Culture, and Education sectors in Kenya. Prior to his current role, he was previously the Head of Strategic Change, Arts, British Council, where he co-ordinated the remodeling of the global arts group in response to the dual challenges of COVID 19 and new performance indicators and co- led the strategic response to a 3-year funding bid opportunity for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
He also led the arts and creative industries programme as Director Arts, sub–Saharan Africa for the British Council. Working across 19 countries with teams in the UK and Africa to develop creative connections and programmes. He had strategic and operational responsibilities for our work connecting audiences, creatives and entrepreneurs in Africa and the UK.

Adam Lane

At Huawei since 2014, and based in Nairobi since 2016, Adam is currently responsible for working with governments, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, the media and other stakeholders with a focus on Kenya and East Africa region. Adam helps these groups understand how to use ICT for development in their strategies, policies, and programs, as well as develop partnerships, projects, training programs, and other cross-sector collaborations with various actors in the ICT ecosystem.

Previously, Adam was based in Huawei’s HQ as a Director for Corporate Sustainable Development. Prior to working for Huawei, Adam worked for Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) for more than 6 years, based in Beijing. He worked with both multinational and domestic companies, NGOs and foundations on sustainability strategy, stakeholder engagement and strategic philanthropy initiatives. Before BSR, Adam led Plan International’s Corporate Partnerships function in China, and during several years at AIESEC in Mainland China and the UK, Adam led efforts to teach students about sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.

Dan Karuga

Prior to joining SC Ventures, Dan was the East Africa Managing Director of Branch International, a Visa and a16z backed growth stage fintech startup providing digital financial services in Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria and India. As East Africa MD, Dan grew Branch’s monthly active userbase 100X, turned around profitability, pioneered first local commercial paper program, and directed the company in acquiring a microfinance bank in Kenya (first bank acquisition by a tech company). Before Branch, Dan had a 10-year international tax and M&A (buy and sell side) consulting career with Pricewaterhouse Coopers(PWC) in Nairobi, New York, and Los Angeles. He serves on five boards across Kenya, Uganda and Ghana.

Dan holds an MBA dfrom the University of California, Berkeley, and a BA from Kenyatta University. He is a Certified Executive Coach with The Academy of Executive Coaching, UK, a Certified Practitioner of Human-Centered Design from Luma Institute USA, and a Certified Director from the Centre for Corporate Governance in Kenya.

Christine Maina leads the East Africa Venture Capital Association (EAVCA), driving policy advocacy, industry insights, and strategic partnerships to promote regional investment growth. Her diverse career spans over 15 years, encompassing roles in PR and marketing communication, investment advisory and logistics across East Africa. With a wealth of leadership experience, Christine has served on the boards of the Economic Transformation Committee in South Sudan and the Deng Foundation. As a dedicated mentor, she has trained and guided numerous emerging entrepreneurs in East Africa. She is passionate about the role of private capital in fostering the next generation of African innovators. 

In her leisure, she enjoys travelling and engaging in conversations.

Dr. Kevit Desai

Dr. Kevit Desai is the former Principal Secretary State Department of East African Community (EAC) prior to that he was the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Vocational and Technical Training (TVET) in the Ministry of Education. He is the Chairman of the Social and Political Pillar of the Vision 2030 Board Committee (2018) and a Trustee of KENET Board of Trustees (2018).

Kevit is also the Chairman of the Permanent Working Group on TVET in Kenya (PWG). He has championed private sector, TVET, government and development partner linkages, towards transformation of Kenya’s technical and vocational training platform. The PWG initiative is promoting continuous communication, common agenda and cross sector coordination throughout different stakeholder networks.

He served as a Governor, Director and CEO of Kenya Private Sector Alliance and a former Commissioner of the Commission for Higher Education. As a Task Force Member of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Desai was responsible for the development of the University Act; Science, Technology and Innovation Act; and Technical, Vocational Education and training (TVET) Act of Parliament. This was a culmination of 15 years of his involvement in all the sessional papers, policy documents and strategies for skills, education and research.

He is also founder and former Managing Director of Centurion Systems Limited, and he holds a PhD in Robotics Systems Engineering. Dr. Desai also served as an Industrial Automation Development Engineer at Nippon ABS Ltd in Tochigi, Japan, and is a master trainer in automation and drive technologies.

Dr. Desai is also the founding Chairman of Linking Industry with Academia (LIWA), Chairman of Council, Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), and Chairman of The Board of Governors – Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf (KTTID). He is also Chairman of the Board of Young Scientists Kenya. Dr. Desai stepped down from Centurion Systems, LIWA, TUM and KTTID after his appointment to the Ministry of Education in February 2018.

Prof. Robert Gateru is the Vice Chancellor of Riara University. He holds a PhD in Microelectronic Engineering & Semiconductor Device Physics from the University of Surrey in the UK; a Masters in the same field from the University of Cambridge also in the UK; and a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Physics from the University of Nairobi. He is a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a Member of the Education Sector Board at the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, among many other Board positions.He previously held senior management positions at the Kenya Methodist University and Kabarak University and has published widely and won various awards and grants.

Prof. Wanja Mwaura Tenambergen

Prof. Wanja Mwaura-Tenambergen is an Associate Professor of Health Systems Management. Her main interest is in health financing under the aspect of improved access to primary care health services, especially in rural areas of low- and middle-income countries. Prof. Tenambergen is an accomplished and visionary leader in higher education. With over 15 years of experience, she has held various administrative roles and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and student success.
Prof. Tenambergen holds a PhD and Master in Public Health (Health Financing) both from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok Thailand, MSc. in Management and Organizational Development from the United States International University-Africa, Nairobi Kenya, and a Bachelor of Arts from Kenyatta University, Kenya.

Prof. Tenambergen previously served as the Chairperson of the Department of Health Systems Management in Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), where she spear-headed the development of training curricula for undergraduate, masters and PhD studies in health systems management in Kenya. She was the country coordinator for the collaborative projects between Kenya Methodist University (Kenya), Neu Ulm University of Applied Sciences (Germany), University of Western Cape (South Africa), and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (Tanzania), to develop multiple country training programs in
health information management and health data analytics with the support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation.
Prof. Tenambergen served as the Director of Research, Innovation and Extension in KeMU where she guaranteed the quality of research in the university for students and faculty. She has been involved in numerous research projects. She previously held the position of Director
of University Advancement and Marketing and was member of the Governing Board of the Directorate of Quality Assurance and Performance in KeMU. As a respected scholar in her field, Prof. Wanja has published extensively on topics related to strengthening the management of health systems.
Prof. Tenambergen has deep passion to improve learning and teaching in higher education. Her vision is to provide relevant inputs to the advancement of higher education through transformational teaching & research methods. She is the current Chairperson of the Association of Faculty Enrichment in Learning and Teaching (AFELT). She advocates for creating partnerships with organizations and the community to advance quality in learning, teaching and research. She believes that teaching and learning has be closely linked to the problems in the community and their solutions.

Prof. Margaret J. Hutchinson

Prof. Hutchinson is the Acting Vice Chancellor and Full Professor of Horticulture of the University of Nairobi. She is also the Substantive Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Enterprise) and Immediate Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance, Planning and Development) at the University of Nairobi.

Prof Hutchinson holds a PhD from the University of Guelph, Canada, and MSc and BSc from the University of Nairobi. She has over 43 years of experience in Agricultural research, extension, Innovation and Technology transfer and strategic administration. At the university, she holds several administrative positions, supporting management to deliver the university mandate. She is widely published and a mentor and role model for students and researchers across Africa.

Prof Hutchinson consults with many organizations in matters Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security, Gender Mainstreaming in Agriculture, Leadership, governance and Transformation nationally and internationally.

She is a member of several professional bodies such as the International Society of Horticultural Science, African Crop Science Society, Horticultural Association of Kenya, Kenya Professional Association of Women in Agriculture and Environment, the Agricultural Society of Kenya and Institute of Directors.

Prof Hutchinson is a highly motivated, self-driven, results-focused person who is passionate about economic, social and spiritual and societal transformation of individuals, persons, Country and the African Continent.

I have been a Chemistry teacher, Principal of several High Schools, Provincial Director of Education, Deputy Director of Staff Training (Kenya Education Management Institute), Senior Deputy Director for Policy and Planning at the Ministry Headquarters and Senior Deputy Director for Research and Curriculum Development at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development.

I am a Senior Fulbright Scholar having been to the USA in 2011- 2012 researching and teaching at the University of Texas A&M.

I am also a leading consultant in Research, Organizational Leadership and Performance. I have at Moi University worked as Director, Quality Assurance and Standards and hold a wide research and publication track record of over twenty publications.

Administratively, I have acted as Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Planning and Development and also as the Ag. Vice Chancellor Moi University. Currently, I am the Vice Chancellor of Daystar University.

I have skills in the area of Leadership and Management, research methods, strategic planning and management, organizational capacity building, team building, decision making & problem solving, research and report writing, training of trainers, trainer of entrepreneurs, proposal and project writing, computer literacy and grounded skills in the application of ICT in teaching instruction (pedagogy). I am also a peer- reviewer on Quality for the Commission of University Education in Kenya.

I am a full member of the Kenya Institute of Management, The African Network of Internalization of Education, The Academy of Human Resource Development and Women Educational Researchers of Kenya. As my contribution to the community I am the current Chairman of the Kakamega County Education Board, having served the board for the last 4 years.

I am a researcher with over 6 years’ experience in Social, Opinion and Market Research. I have very good technical know-how in managing and executing small to large-scale social, opinion and market research surveys for domestic and international agencies, government agencies, grant organisations and academic institutions. Over the years, Eric has acquired vast knowledge in implementing evaluation studies, public policy and governance research, market assessment surveys, organisational assessments and quality surveys, data collection and supervision. Eric has demonstrated experience in implementing small to large-scale research projects with local and international organisations & donors, including governance studies with NDI (National Democracy Institute), health studies with the UNICEF, RED CROSS, WORLD VISION, Population Services Kenya (PS Kenya), gender and agriculture studies with Fairtrade Africa, Syngenta East Africa; financial studies with Opportunity International; and many more. Prof. Kosgey is a Professor of Animal Sciences (Animal Breeding and Genetics). He is a Kenyan citizen and currently the Vice-Chancellor of Moi University (Eldoret, Kenya). Isaac holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Animal Sciences and a Master of Science degree in Animal Sciences with Distinction from Wageningen University (Wageningen, The Netherlands), a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Production and a Diploma in Animal Husbandry with Distinction, both from Egerton University (Njoro, Kenya), a Diploma in Law with Distinction from Mt. Kenya University (Thika, Kenya), a Bachelor of Laws with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) from the Open University of Tanzania (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) and a Master of Business Administration degree from Kenyatta University (Nairobi, Kenya).

He is currently undertaking a Master of Laws degree at the Open University of Tanzania and also awaiting to graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the same University. I am currently the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Egerton University. I have variously initiated and/or guided development and implementation of the strategic plan for 2018-2023 and policies of the University.

I am on unpaid leave of absence from the University of Nairobi where I serve as a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the School of Pharmacy. I have published widely in my discipline.

During May 2007- May 2017, I successfully served as the Principal of College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi where I was the Academic Research, Financial and Administrative head of the college. The College comprises the Schools of; Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Siences, Nursing Sciences and Public Health, the University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Dieases, KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research, the East Africa Kidney Institute and the Centre for HIV/Aids Research and Prevention. I was responsible for all research activities at the College ensuring compliance to project objectives and prudent utilization of resources per approved budgets. I competently handled College responsibilities and guided its expansion and excellent performance culminating in it being awarded a Shield as ''Center of Excellence in the Health Sciences'' by the East African Community in 2014. Further, research funding grew about four times and the College had a continuous level of ‘Excellent performance’ in performance contracting amongst the six colleges of the University.

I have held various positions in the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya including the Chairmanship for a period of 6 years. I have broad experience in the pharmaceutical regulatory systems locally and internationally, and specifically in the quality control and quality assurance of medicines. Due to my commitment and exemplary pharmaceutical services, I was awarded the “Head of State Commendation“ and the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya conferred on me the title of “Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya''.

I have a demonstrated strong performance on Governance in institutions where I have chaired the Board or been a member.

In conclusion, I have a record of a successful, resourceful, competent and productive leader well prepared and capable of shouldering any responsibility entrusted to me.

Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho is a Professor in Fisheries Ecology at Karatina University, Department of Natural Resources. Her academic growth started as a Tutorial Fellow in 1990 at Kenyatta University in the Department of Zoology. She obtained her Bachelor of Education (Science) and MSc. from the University of Nairobi and PhD from Kenyatta University. Prof. Aloo-Obudho is currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academics, Research and Student Affairs (ARSA) at Karatina University in Nyeri County. Ken is a lawyer by training with extensive experience in banking, finance, human rights, governance, and public sector reforms. Embracing challenges with enthusiasm, he has built a diverse and accomplished career.

Ken has collaborated with numerous institutions across the Public Sector, Private Sector, and Non-Governmental Organisations. His notable affiliations include The Konrad Adenauer Foundation, The International Commission of Jurists (Kenya Chapter), and placements as a Pegasus Scholar of the Inner Temple at One Essex Court Chambers, London, and the then Paisner & Company Solicitors, London. His career also includes roles with The Standard Chartered Bank, The Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority, The Interest Rates Advisory Centre Ltd, The Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, and the then Public Complaints Standing Committee of Kenya (Ombudsman). Additionally, Ken has consulted for high-profile clients such as the then Directorate of Public Prosecutions, The Department of Ethics and Integrity in the Office of the President, The National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ), DfID, USAID, and GTZ.

Ken's most recent long-term engagement in the Public Sector was in the Shipping and Maritime Industry, where he served as Secretary-General of the Intergovernmental Standing Committee on Shipping (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia). During his tenure, he modernized the institution, making it more client-oriented and technology-driven. He spearheaded the creation of its first-ever Strategic Plan in 50 years (1967-2017) and successfully lobbied for the onshoring of Marine Cargo Insurance within member states. This led to amendments in the Insurance Acts of Tanzania and Kenya, with Uganda and Zambia in various stages of implementing legal changes.

Ken has a professional interest in Public Sector Management and Reform, Justice, and Software Development in both private and public sectors. He is at the forefront of Information Technology, focusing on leveraging technology to address everyday challenges and problems.

Philip Oyier

Philip Oyier holds an MSc in Information Systems from the University of Nairobi and currently a PhD student at JKUAT School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT). He is the Digital Health Lead at Digital Applied Research Centre (DHARC), coordinates the Kenyan-German Centre for Data Analytics (KGDA) and a member of The Innovation Centre for Computing and Technological Solutions (iCCATS). He is a certified trainer with industry in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Cloud Computing (Huawei), DB2 Database, Application Fundamentals and Cloud Application Developer (IBM)) and Enterprise Systems using SAP ERP. His research interests include theory and application of Intelligent Systems, Software Engineering theory and applications especially in Health and Agriculture. He has coordinated hackathons and bootcamps, where students apply different technologies, including AI to design solutions and solve identified problems. He was a mentor to students from Kenyan universities during the 2023/2024 Huawei ICT Innovation Competitions, where teams progressed from local to regional to global finals.

Ian Lorenzen is the Executive Director and Partner at GrowthAfrica, a premier East African impact accelerator dedicated to fostering ambitious, innovative, and scalable ventures. Since its inception in 2002 in Nairobi, GrowthAfrica has run 12 acceleration programs, graduating 128 ventures and 248 entrepreneurs across Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia. An entrepreneur and innovator by heart and mind, Ian has co-founded several businesses and has worked with entrepreneurial ventures in Denmark, the Philippines, and East Africa. Born in Denmark, he has made East Africa his home since 2000, when he joined the team spearheading the continental expansion of the emerging markets IT company Metrocomia in Uganda.

Ian's journey with GrowthAfrica began in 2003, focusing on facilitating and developing business partnerships and knowledge transfer between Nordic and East African SMEs. Between 2008 and 2011, Ian stepped out of GrowthAfrica to gain experience in a larger international company, working for the Danish medico company Radiometer. During this time, he spent one year in Denmark and three years in Kenya, establishing and developing a distributor network in Eastern and Southern Africa, business and project development, and managing Danida-supported partnership projects in Egypt, Nepal, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Currently, she is a senior lecturer at Daystar University. Dr. Robert Karanja (PhD)

Dr. Robert Karanja is a biomedical scientist and development entrepreneur with 20 years of experience in STEM and development sectors. He holds a PhD in Parasitology and Entomology from JKUAT. As a scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Robert was actively involved in the establishment of the intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer office (TTO), where he discovered his passion for innovation. Dr. Julius Ecuru

Dr Ecuru is a Principal Scientist and Manager, Research Innovation Coordination Units at icipe (presently BioInnovate Africa Programme and the Regional Coordination Unit of the Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (Rsif)). He works on issues related to technological innovation and supports scientists to translate research outputs into practical uses in society.

His research interests include developing interactive learning models, which make universities, firms and related organisations more productive, and catalytic centres of innovation, growth, and social development. He also contributes to scholarly work in the chemical and bioengineering sciences and supports regulatory science and research ethics capacity development.

Dr Ecuru is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Global Network for Economics of Learning, Innovation, and Competence Building Systems (GLOBELICS) and a Fogarty Bioethics Fellow. He has served as the Co-Chair of the International Advisory Council of the Global Bioeconomy (IACGB), and as a member of several scientific and advisory committees and boards of organisations and initiatives that support scientific research, innovation, and business development.

He received his B.Sc (Chemistry) Honours and M. Sc in Environment and Natural Resources from Makerere University, Kampala, and holds a Ph.D in Technology (Innovation Systems and Development) from the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden. Wilfred is Villgro Africa’s Co-Founder and CEO. He brings diverse experiences, having lived and worked in the Middle East, India and East Africa. In these roles, she has fostered strategic partnerships with industry, global and local research consortiums, higher education institutions, and local communities to promote solutions to sustainable living. Jörissen’s work explores the intersection of education, culture, and mediality in digital transformation. His current research encompasses several major projects on digitalization and artificial intelligence in Culture and Arts Education, postdigital youth culture, Culture and Arts Education in Societal Transformations, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Recent developments focus on sustainability and cultural resilience in postdigital and decolonial perspectives.

A member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, he has received recognition for his contributions to educational and cultural research. He serves on the German UNESCO Commission's Culture Committee, its Selection Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage, as well as expert on digitalization for UNESCO, contributing to visibility, evaluation processes and policy frameworks in these fields.

Brigadier Hillary B Kipkosgey is currently the Acting Director General / CEO of the Kenya Space Agency, a position he assumed in June 2021 on secondment from the Kenya Defence Forces. Prior to this, he was the Head of Logistics and Maintenance at the National Air Support Department.

Brig Kipkosgey has held several appointments previously, which include Defence Attaché at the Kenya Embassy in Washington DC; Commanding Officer Aircraft Maintenance Wing; Head of Coordination at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC); Head of Information and Communications Technology Division at NCTC; and Senior Instructor at the Defense Forces Technical College, among others. Florence Kimata is an Enterprise Development and SME Financing Policy Advisor. She has over 20 years experience in Policy Advisory, Commercial and Investment Banking within the East African Region. She served as a Business Reforms Specialist at the Ministry of East African Community and Regional Development where she successfully provided technical assistance in transforming public service delivery particularly in the approval of construction permits and registering businesses.

The interventions focused on business process re-engineering and digitization of approval processes aimed at enabling the business environment for the private sector.

She cascaded the reform agenda to the Counties and led the development of the Sub-National Business Reform Agenda.

Prior to her role in DBRT, she was the SME Advisor to the Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives where she provided technical assistance in the design and implementation of MSME development policy and financing solutions.

Her advisory role in Government was facilitated through a Consultancy with the International Finance Corporation (IFC).Florence is a Member of the KeNIA National Innovation Technical Committee.

She has championed the Startup Kenya Agenda for the past 6 years. She provided technical assistance in the design and implementation of various MSME Development and Financing Policy initiatives such as the premier Startup Policy Hackathon, the Kenya Industry and Entrepreneurship Program, the formation of the Kenya Development Bank and the National Guarantee Scheme.

She initiated the formation of the Association of Startup and SME Enablers of Kenya (ASSEK) to facilitate effective engagement between Entrepreneurship Support Organizations and Government. Prof. Romanus Odhiambo was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Meru University of Science and Technology on 18th July, 2018.  Prof. Romanus Odhiambo has over 26-years progressive experience in academics, research and leadership with over 18 years in senior leadership positions. Pure Mathematics and Actuarial Science and BSc. Mathematics and Economics.  Prof. Odhiambo has been involved and continues to be involved in the supervision of Ph.D and Masters’ theses examinations. To date, he has supervised over 27 Ph.D students and 32 Masters’ students to completion.  His current research interests include: Robust estimation in finite population; multiplicative bias reduction; artificial neutral network; quantile regression, non-parametric regression for finite population inference; small area estimation; handling non-responses; handling measurement errors; estimating finite population; total mean and variance under various sampling designs and robust estimation.  In relation to these topics, Prof. Odhiambo has published 46 articles and participated in over 22 national and international conferences and workshops.  He has also co-authored 5 undergraduate textbooks.

Professor Daniel Mugendi is a renowned scholar, leader and a consultant with an illustrious management expertise. His remarkable career in academia, research, education and training sectors, spanning over more than three decades, has seen him make substantial contributions in the areas of his expertise including the development of University Education in Kenya.

He embarked on his professional journey as a Researcher with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) in July 1986 and made tremendous professional and academic progress. Later, he joined Kenyatta University (KU) in 1999, where he rose through the ranks of academic and professional leadership. He served in various administrative positions and responsibilities that included but not limited to; the Chairman of the Department of Environmental Foundations, Dean of the School of Environmental Studies and Human Sciences and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance, Planning and Development) in Kenyatta University.

Currently, Prof. Mugendi is serving as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Embu and the Chairman, Vice-Chancellor’s Committee of Public Universities in Kenya. Nekesah is a Kenyan and holds an MSc. in Agricultural and Applied Economics and a BSc. in Horticulture. Her previous positions included Business Development Manager, Africa at Cropnuts Limited, where she promoted the use of soil testing technologies and services among smallholder farmers through B2B partnerships in Africa and BIOFIX brand manager where she was responsible for the commercialization of legume inoculant technologies in the COMESA region.

She is also a mentor at VC4A Bridge for Billions- Opportunities for Youth in Africa (OYA), the Innovation, Development, and Entrepreneurship for All (IDEA) Platform, which is supported by UNIDO, FAO, the African Union, and the Italian Agency for Development Corporation, and a SAIS 2 project Business Coach through the VC4A Platform inclusive innovation capacity building program. As a mentor and business coach she was tasked with assisting businesses and startups to develop and actualize their business ideas by ensuring that they reach the implementation, commercialization, and funding stages.

I have held the position of senior lecturer in fine art at the University of Pretoria since 2015. Prior, I served as head of the Department of Visual Arts and Design at the Vaal University of Technology. My research is embedded in tracing and documenting the artmaking and history of apartheid through object histories. This research is available in both my practice as an artist and as an academic. I believe that this enables a reclaiming and inserting of narratives into current history and discourses. My current research has bled into art education that retains the notion of inserting missing texts in art history. I hold the position of National Vice President of the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA) and served as National President for a period of six years. I currently sit as Chair of the international network, Exploring Visual Cultures (EVC). This Network comprises art educators from Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Germany and South Africa. The Network sits between Africa and Europe a network and bridge between these continents. I am honoured to be an Associate Member of UNESCO-UNITWIN Arts Education Research for Cultural Diversity and Sustainable Development.

Ms. Madelena Monoja joined the United Nations Development Programme in Kenya, as the UNDP Deputy Resident Representative-Programme on 1 August 2023.

Madelena has over 17 years of distinguished service with UNDP, serving in progressively responsible positions including in conflict and post conflict contexts. Madelena is joining the team in Kenya, after concluding a successful tour of duty as the Deputy Representative for Programme in Zimbabwe-UNDP’s largest programme in Africa (2019-2023). Prior to that, she served as Programme Manager of the UNDP Health Portfolio in Afghanistan (2015-2019). Before that, she served with UNDP in South Sudan for over a decade, in various capacities-including heading the multimillion-dollar Global Fund Programme and the Inclusive Growth Portfolio. Before joining the United Nations, Madelena worked for various grass roots and community-based organizations as well as the International Rescue Committee.

Madelena has extensive experience working on development effectiveness issues, health, resilience, eenvironment, climate change and governance, amongst others.

Ian is an ICT, Innovation and Public Policy professional with 13 years progressive and diverse range of experience in both private and public service, with immersive knowledge of and experience in the national innovation ecosystem, government relations, policy development, stakeholder management, strategic planning, and ICT public policy.
Ian has served in both private and public sector in different roles having worked with Chase Bank Kenya Ltd, Novacom Systems Ltd, Kent IT Clinic and as a pioneering staff of Konza Technopolis Development Authority most recently. 
During his time at Konza Technopolis, Ian pioneered the Konza Innovation Ecosystem Initiative, a quadruple-helix initiative geared towards developing a synergized Kenyan Innovation Ecosystem. He also played a key role in winning the bid to host the prestigious International Association of Science Parks (IASP) Conference in Nairobi, Kenya.  
Ian has experience in organizing and executing innovation challenges, has served as a judge in innovation competitions and has offered mentorship to startups in the ecosystem. In his previous role he led innovation programs at Konza Technopolis towards building a cohesive startup and innovation ecosystem for the country.

Madelena has over 17 years of distinguished service with UNDP, serving in progressively responsible positions including in conflict and post conflict contexts. Madelena is joining the team in Kenya, after concluding a successful tour of duty as the Deputy Representative for Programme in Zimbabwe-UNDP’s largest programme in Africa (2019-2023). Prior to that, she served as Programme Manager of the UNDP Health Portfolio in Afghanistan (2015-2019). Before that, she served with UNDP in South Sudan for over a decade, in various capacities-including heading the multimillion-dollar Global Fund Programme and the Inclusive Growth Portfolio. Before joining the United Nations, Madelena worked for various grass roots and community-based organizations as well as the International Rescue Committee.

Madelena has extensive experience working on development effectiveness issues, health, resilience, eenvironment, climate change and governance, amongst others.

Madelena is a South Sudan national. She holds an MBA from Wales University in the UK and a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Mumbai University in India.

Omiti Onunga John Frederick is a Mechanical Engineer currently serving as a Patent Examiner at the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO).Before his specialization in intellectual property which began at the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI), Omiti gained valuable engineering experience as a Workshop Engineer and a Mechanical Engineer in different companies where he contributed to various engineering projects that enhanced operational efficiencies.

He holds a Master of Intellectual Property (MIP) from Africa University in Zimbabwe, equipping him with advanced knowledge and skills necessary for navigating the complexities of intellectual property law. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, laying the foundation for his technical expertise.

Dr. Byson Sabola

Dr. Byson Sabola is a Capacity Building Officer at the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO).He holds a PhD in Management from the University of Central Nicaragua, an MSc in Project Management from Walden University, and a Masters Degree in Intellectual Property from Africa University. Additionally, he earned both a Master of Education in Policy, Planning and Leadership and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Malawi.

His work focuses on providing training and awareness programs designed to enhance the strategic management of intellectual property (IP) assets. This includes guiding institutions and businesses in identifying, protecting, and commercializing their IP.

Dr. Sabola’s journey in education and development began prior to joining ARIPO, as he worked in public education in various capacities, and had a stint as a Monitoring, Evaluation, and Research Coordinator in a non-governmental organization with a special focus on education.

Julia Greenland

Julia Greenland is Managing Director: Africa for the Healthy Brains Global Initiative. She leads on the development implementation of outcome-based mental health programming in Africa.

 

She has recently joined HBGI after 7 years in the Kenya office of the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, where she was most recently a director in the Girl Capital team. At CIFF, she designed and managed a substantial portfolio of investments in the health and empowerment of African girls, and led on the development and negotiation of two Development Impact Bonds for Adolescent Reproductive Health. Previous to CIFF, Julia spent a decade on the front lines of service delivery with Marie Stopes International, with roles in Kenya, Papua New Guinea and Uganda.

She holds an MSc from the London School of Economics and a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategy and Innovation from the Said Business School, Oxford University.  She is a trained Executive Leadership Coach. She lives in Nairobi with her husband and two young daughters.

Mary heads the partnerships and linkages department at the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), Kenya and is a Senior Mathematics Education expert with over 29 years’ experience conducting research and teacher trainings in Africa. She holds a ministerial appointment to coordinate ADEA’s ICQN-MSE, a policy dialogue forum; and executive committee member, SMASE Africa network of 29 African countries. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Communication and Technology, University of Nairobi-Kenya and Post-Graduate-Diploma-in-Teacher-Education, Hiroshima-University-Japan. She is passionate about capacity development in STEM education.
